It’s also not afraid to call out where the industry (and yes, that includes the Academy) could’ve done better: Tins of Max Factor Pan-Cake makeup confront blackface in the costume and makeup gallery, the Mount Rushmore backdrop from North By Northwest recognizes that it’s set on stolen Lakota land, a hallway of industry challenges acknowledges labor disputes and the Me Too movement, the script section examines the representation of Native voices, and the animation gallery alone confronts minstrelsy, cultural appropriation and the gender pay gap. Yes, Citizen Kane and The Wizard of Oz are celebrated as cornerstones, but so too are the martial arts movies of Bruce Lee and the early-20th-century films of Oscar Micheaux, the first Black feature filmmaker. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles is a museum that showcases the history, science, and cultural impact of the film industry. Instead, the Academy Museum’s core exhibition recognizes that there are many stories (plural) that’ve pushed cinema forward, and it’s not shy about the ones that’ve held it back, either. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has opened, laying a yellow brick road to not just Dorothy’s ruby slippers but also R2-D2, Hayao Miyazaki’s storyboards, Spike Lee’s handwritten Oscars. How do I get tickets to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Timed. The museum is FREE for children (age 17-), Museum Members, Academy members, and CA EBT cardholders. It takes about two hours to experience the museum. Admission to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is 25 for adults, 19 for those 62+, 15 for college students, and free for children 17 and below as well as museum members. Given that this is a movie museum in L.A., you might expect a certain type of Hollywood-centric narrative: Major studios birthed blockbusters and the best ones were bestowed with Oscars. The museum is open seven days a week, Sunday through Thursday from 10am to 6pm, and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 8pm. To renovate a historical structure into a museum, we innovated electrical solutions including seismic. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opens its doors to the public in late September so adult visitors, have 25 at the ready. Walk-up tickets are available at the museum on a first-come, first-served basis.

But I think on the sketch comedy side, it's still a little slow to break in. In scripted too! You have people like Michaela Coel, who are doing these gut-wrenchingly beautiful pieces of art - not even “TV,” just art. We've made some inroads in late-night and in some other formats, but I think there's just a lot more to be done. I really try to work with as many Black women in sketch as I can. Especially in sketch comedy, there's nothing but room. you know, “the coastal elites,” the New Yorkers, the Brooklynites. Where is “The Southern Black Women's Comedy Show?” You know what I mean? In white male sketch comedy, you've got all sorts: you've got Canadian comedians, the Southern-fried comics, you've got the comedians in L.A. It won’t be enough until we have the sort of representation where we're seeing all types. All of these things are happening and I love seeing them. My beloved Amber Ruffin, who I have known for decades and who wrote on season one of A Black Lady Sketch Show, has been killing it with her late-night show. I want to hire you." Phoebe Robinson has a bunch of shows she's doing - she has a new one on Comedy Central. I met her when she was an intern - I was just like, "You're funny on Twitter. With the success of Insecure, lots of women… I mean, my friend Ziwe is coming to Showtime with her show, and she used to write for my late-night show. There are only a few of us who are in the comedy space - who are doing it. Look, I think we're just getting started in terms of Black women creating, starring in, and writing their own projects. When A Black Lady Sketch Show premiered in 2019, you said that you decided to use “A” in the title instead of “The” because you hoped that, one day, your show would just be “one of many.” In the two years since, how do you think the culture around Black women-led comedy series has shifted? (A few impressive men show up too, from Jesse Williams and Laz Alonso to Omarion and Miguel.)Īhead of Friday’s HBO premiere for A Black Lady Sketch Show, NYLON hopped on the phone with Robin Thede to talk about season two, celebrating Black joy, the slow-but-sure changing tides for Black women working in comedy, the bright side of shooting a show during the middle of a world-shifting pandemic, and how Trump being in the White House inspired her eerily prescient sketch idea about four women stranded together at the end of the world. have assembled a similarly stacked cast of guest stars this time around - including Gabrielle Union, Skai Jackson, Kim Wayans, Amber Riley, and Ayesha Curry. And after securing everyone from Laverne Cox to Angela Bassett (who went on to receive an Emmy nomination for her performance) to guest star in its inaugural season, Thede & Co. Haddassah Olayinka Ali-Youngman, Pre-Ph.D?). The end-of-the-world interstitials continue - albeit without Brunson, who had to leave the show to develop her own comedy with ABC - as do some of the show’s most memorable characters. (Like many shows, it was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.) In its sophomore outing, ABLSS continues to hilariously shine a light on specifically Black issues - too-long hair appointments, the overwhelming whiteness of the judicial system, the origins of CPT, twerking - through a universal lens. This Friday, HBO will premiere the long-awaited second season of Thede’s brilliant sketch comedy series. But fortunately, for us, that cancellation would eventually pave the way for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Unfortunately, The Rundown was unceremoniously canceled after only one (critically-acclaimed) season. In 2015, she became the first Black woman to lead a writers room for a late-night talk show when she accepted the position for The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and two years later, she broke similar ground when she premiered her own late-night show on BET, The Rundown with Robin Thede. This didn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Thede’s work - much of which was already history-making. This fact gave ABLSS a sense of built-in importance, but none of it would have mattered if the HBO series didn’t deliver the laughs. Created by Robin Thede (a Black woman), directed by a Black woman, written by Black women, produced by Black women, and starring Black women (including central cast members Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Quinta Brunson, and Gabrielle Dennis), it was the first sketch comedy show in the history of the medium to center the Black female perspective. When it premiered in August 2019, A Black Lady Sketch Show felt like something entirely new and long overdue. We must do something to thank Applejack for single-hoofedly saving the town. Pinkie Pie: Apple tastic! Mayor Mare: Exactly. So long, Winona! Applejack: Yee haw! Pinkie Pie: Yee haw! Ride 'em, cowpony! Mayor Mare: Applejack was just. Just next time, try and steer clear of Ponyville. DaisyJo: And it just gave us all the willies, don'tcha know. Now what was that all about? DaisyJo: Oh my! Begging your pardon, Applejack, but Moo-riella here saw one of those nasty snakes. Applejack: Come on, little dogies! Turn! Winona, put 'em up! Ha hah! Gotcha. Put 'em up, girl! Winona: Rarity: Pinkie Pie: This is the best rodeo show I've ever seen. Rarity: But Mayor, whatever shall we do? Rainbow Dash: Look there! Applejack: YEEHAW! Applejack: Move aside, Winona. Rainbow Dash: STAMPEDE! Sweetie Drops: Stampede! Pinkie Pie: Hey.! This makes my voice sound silly! Twilight Sparkle: Pinkie Pie, are you crazy?! Run! Mayor Mare: Everypony calm down. These apples aren't gonna shake themselves outta the trees. I'm gonna get every last apple out of those trees this applebuck season all by myself. Applejack: Don't you use your fancy mathematics to muddy the issue! I said I could handle this harvest and I'm gonna prove it to you. This is your sister Applejack, remember? The loyalest of friends and the most dependable of ponies? Big McIntosh: But still only one pony, and one pony plus hundreds o' apple trees just doesn't add up to. Applejack: Are you sayin' my mouth is makin' promises my legs can't keep? Big McIntosh: Eeyup. Big McIntosh: Biting off more than you can chew is just what I'm afraid of. I'll take a bite out of this job by day's end. I haven't met an apple orchard yet that I can't handle. Applejack: Come on, big brother! You need to rest up and get yourself better. That there is the biggest bumper crop o' apples I ever laid eyes on. Applejack: Boy howdy! I got my work cut out for me. You may craft a few items with different applications with the shards. How to Make Use of Amethyst Shards in Minecraft? Remember not to use a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment, as you'll get nothing because the budding amethyst block isn't obtainable in Survival mode. If you find an amethyst crystal in the fourth growth stage (cluster), mine it with any type of pickaxe, and it'll drop four shards.Īnd that's it repeat the steps until you collect as many shards as you need. When you go inside the geode, look around for budding amethyst. ĭrinking a Potion of Night Vision will help you see better in the dark and underwater. You can also set up a server and have your friends join you in your chase of a Minecraft amethyst shard. Once the middle value (Y) is 64 or a higher number, you should start looking around for the geode's outer layer of smooth basalt. We recommend going into the game settings and making your position visible on the screen. There are two easy ways to do that - explore underground caves or underwater. There's no way for you to make amethyst, so you'll have to find it in the open world. Now that you know what you're looking for, let's discuss how to obtain amethyst in Minecraft. While the regular Minecraft amethyst blocks are only for decoration, there's an 8.3% chance to find budding amethyst blocks instead.Īmethyst crystals spawn only on budding amethyst and have four growth stages: In most cases, geodes have a crack, allowing access to their inner part. An amethyst shard is a small piece of a larger cluster.Īmethyst geodes are located underground between Y -64 and Y 30. Let's get started! What Is an Amethyst Shard in Minecraft?Īmethysts are purple-colored crystals with which you can create a bunch of items. We'll also cover the crafting recipes you need them for. In this guide, we'll explain what these shards are and how to get them. They aren't as common as other resources but are still fairly easy to obtain if you know where to look. Amethyst shards are a valuable material in Minecraft. Previously, CZ dismissed criticisms about Binance's financial stability, which have been mounting since the bankruptcy of the crypto exchange FTX. In a somewhat veiled reference to ongoing legal issues, CZ also mentioned the current regulatory environment for crypto companies, describing it as "increasingly hostile." As a countermeasure, he revealed that the newly-appointed CEO of Binance.US, Norman Reed, is well-suited to navigate the company through these turbulent waters. CZ praised Shroder for accomplishing what he "set out to do when he joined two years ago." Zhao believes that all of these developments made Binance.US a more robust entity. In a recent post on the social media platform X, CZ encouraged the public to "ignore FUD," affirming that Shroder departed the company on good terms.Īccording to CZ's statement, under Shroder's leadership, the US branch achieved significant milestones, including raising capital, expanding its product offerings, and gaining market share. The string of exits stirred online discussions, forcing many to wonder if the firm's legal troubles are more severe than initially thought. The legal allegations include the mishandling of customer funds and selling unregistered securities. The exit of Binance.US top executives has fueled speculation, especially given that Binance and its partner company face lawsuits from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). One day later, two more top executives - Krishna Juvvadi, head of legal, and Sidney Majalya, chief risk officer - resigned from the firm. Such transliteration often produces unusual letter combinations which confuse Americans or cause them to view the word as completely unpronouncable. It is a product of pedantic transliteration such as is done on passports and in library card catelogues. KH is an attempt to convey a letter sound which most English speakers cannot pronounce anyway. This produces a vibration similiar to that of a Scotish rolled R. KH is pronounced with the it almost touching the hard palate (the ridge of bone inside the row of upper front teeth). The H in hospital is pronounced with the tip of the tongue touching the lower front teeth. I've used Russian as an example here, but the same principles could be employed for other Cyrillic languages, sure. In a strict transliteration, one could make the argument for ch-how the voiceless velar fricative is spelt in the majority of Latin-based languages that use it-or j/x, as in Spanish. It should be h, the closest English equivalent. Lastly, the transliteration of Х as kh, mentioned in your question, is plain tacky.I'd go as far as making it look French, e.g. The pronunciation of zh is not unambiguous to an English speaker. Their transliteration of Ж as zh also leaves something to be desired. One shortfall is the fact that they use y to represent three distinct Russian characters (Й, Ы, and Ь), the last of which is not even a letter but a sign that "indicates palatalization of the preceding consonant." Their attempts at doing so have become the standard employed by Western governments. For additional letters, I'd make comparisons with other languages, or simply use what scientific transliterators have decided on.ī) Academics have tried to transliterate Cyrillic languages in such a way that they are easily intelligible to English speakers, using only the basic 26 Latin characters. Since Serbian has a Cyrillic and Latin alphabet, this could be used as a base. It becomes a matter of whether one wants the transliteration to be loyal to the Cyrillic, or easily interpreted by English speakers.Ī) Russian has many of the same Cyrillic characters as Serbian. So, what is the reasoning for this weird combination of consonants and what are the arguments against other reasonable choices that are already used in other English words that have the same phoneme? Trying to pronounce it phonetically results in Klingon-sounding sputtering noise. "kh" seems like the least suitable choice, as it explicitly suggests "k", as in "Khan (Wrath of Khan)". "ch" is also problematic, because in some other words ("technology") it's pronounced as "k" (again in contrast to most other languages that have a version of this widespread Greek-based word that is pronounced with "h", as is the greek letter χ). I assume "h" was not used because people may choose to interpret it as a silent letter. In this case, the pronunciation is very close to the hard "h", as in "hospital", "Hungary", and to "ch" in "loch". In this case, the sensible transliteration would be "h", as it is in the original Cyrillic and in most transliteration for other languages (this is why this English transliteration looks very alien and hard to read compared to slavic languages with latin script, even though the pronunciation is almost the same). I'm not a native english speaker and I'm sometimes baffled by the appearance of "kh" in Russian names and other words (for instance the russian lunar rover "Lunokhod"). Pixlr has two options: Pixlr E for photo editing and Pixlr X for graphic design. While it’s less advanced in function than Illustrator, it’s cloud-based and supported on mobile, desktop, or the web. Supporting parents and helping families to be strong and caring is one of the proven solutions to end violence against children. In stark contrast, when families and parents are resilient and helped to cope with crises like COVID the shield stays strong and children are protected from violence. Over 80% of children in our report said that families have grown closer in times of crisis and that their parents and families were there for them. Measures to combat COVID-19 have created a perfect storm exposing parents to stress and increasing the vulnerability of children to violence, especially those already living in violent households. This is exactly what happened this past year. Physical violence, child marriage and sexual exploitation of children all increase. But when that shield is under extreme duress - due to mental illness, substance abuse, economic crisis or hardship - it cracks and children often find themselves in the firing line. Parents are a child’s most important support mechanism and should be a shield from violence. Home is the one place where every child should feel safe. Children put actions to address this threat high on their agenda-hardly a surprise. The report Act Now: How a Global Pandemic is Changing the Lives of Children in the Middle East and Eastern Europe Region, indicates that about 40% of children have experienced physical violence themselves and that 20% know of other children experiencing violence by those they know. Every time we have spoken to children, like we did recently across Middle East and Eastern Europe, our worst fears have been confirmed. I wanted us to be wrong and our projections of a 32% increase in violence to be a significant overstatement. However, millions of children globally who were trapped, stuck at home by COVID-19 did not. It was Sara I was thinking about when I started seeing news reports about the increase in violence at home due to the lockdown-first on my local news in Cyprus, then on international news channels.Īfter just one month of the pandemic, World Vision published a report projecting that 85 million more children are at risk of experiencing violence against children due the confinement measures initiated to address pandemic. Making projections like this can be tricky. We knew the risks, but we strongly felt that it was important to raise the alarm about a hidden crisis that was unfolding, that our staff was starting to see. She was trying to help a young girl, I’ll call her Sara, struggling with mental health issues resulting from violence at home and in school. Thankfully Sara eventually found help. Just few weeks before the world went into lockdown, a friend of mine contacted me asking for advice. |
